When Sheffield United announced the signing of Cameron Archer in the summer there was a real buzz amongst the fan base, and some confusion because of the deal with Aston Villa.

The 22-year-old forward made a move to Sheffield United during the summer transfer window, for a sum close to £18 million, and inked a contract extending until 2027. Subsequent disclosures clarified that the initial fee amounted to £9 million. Should Sheffield United maintain their Premier League status, an additional £9 million would be owed to Aston Villa.

Conversely, if relegation occurred, Sheffield United would effectively recoup their initial £9 million investment when Villa activate their buy-back obligation.

And unfortunately for the Blades, relegation is almost a certainty at this point, meaning Archer will return to Aston Villa in the summer.

Former Villa player turned pundit Alan Hutton has spoken to Villa News about Cameron Archer.

Alan Hutton on Sheffield United striker Cameron Archer

Hutton said:

“I think he’s a really good player and he’s got some attributes like Ollie Watkins a little bit. He’s got that really good pace, he’s a good finisher, he works ever so hard, he’s a constant nuisance. It’s just whether they see him as a real threat to Watkins up front.

“He’ll come back in the summer, go away at pre-season and see how he does there, who are they looking to bring and how much do they have to spend?”

Even though the details of the Archer deal are commonly known, Football Insider recently exclusively disclosed that Aston Villa currently have no intentions to exercise the buy-back clause.

In his 40 appearances in the second tier, Archer has scored 18 goals and assisted his teammates seven times. This season for United it’s been a struggle for the talented striker having scored four goals in 25 games across all competitions.
